An AWESOME cage for a GREAT price
This cage is ROOMY! While my weasel is used to roaming my apartment, I got a slap on the wrist when my landlord found out, so now I must keep him in a cage (...most of the time, at least ;) ). I was disheartened, because I feel like a ferret needs as much room as possible, and this cage seemed too small to me... I was proven wrong!! While he still gets playtime outside of his cage, it's a nice size for sleeping and stretching. I was skeptical over whether the bars would hold my little boy (he's almost fully grown, but not quite there yet), but it's been three days with no break-outs. Awesome! As for the state of the cage when I received it... Nothing was broken, and the packaging was very well sealed (lots of tape - make sure you have a box-cutter or other sharp blade handy). There is a garish "FIESTY FERRET HOME" with a huge image of a ferret on the box, so it's not discreet at all. So be warned about that, if it's relevant to you. The package is also about 50lbs heavy. It took me about 45 minutes to put together. Unlike some reviewers, I didn't have to use any other tools except for the little screwdriver bit that they send along. What a relief! I only had one main problem while putting it together. The instructions aren't very clear, so I wound up putting the four smaller side-panels in upside down. They have a lip on one end, which is supposed to be on the TOP of the panel (facing into the cage), not the BOTTOM. It's where the second-floor and the roof sits (you also secure them with screws, just fyi. It's a very sturdy cage). Just take a few minutes to look everything over, and you'll be fine. It'd definitely help to have somebody hold the pieces together while you're building it. It's tricky (but not impossible) if you're doing it all by yourself. P.S. The ramps might be too steep and/or slippery for your ferret to crawl up. I remedied this by getting some felt from my local craft store and tying it around the ramps. It gives him enough traction so that he doesn't have to jump-and-scramble from one level to the next. And another tip- if your fuzzy wears a collar, I encourage you to stay on the safe side and remove it whenever they're in the cage... JUST to be extra cautious. I don't see any real hazards in this cage, but I always err on the side of safety with my pets. When he's not wearing it, I clip his collar around the top door for extra security, JUST in case he opens it somehow (a fall from 30+ inches up doesn't sound very promising).

AMAZING cage! Similar to critter nation!
Absolutely love this this cage!! I was debating on buying a double story critter nation, but didn’t want to bite the bullet on the steep price. Opted to try this one out to as it’s about half the price! It was relatively easy to assemble, though I didn’t read the instructions and ended up putting a piece on backwards (user error) so I had to disassemble and put it back together (the correct way). It’s super sturdy and very chew proof. I’m using it for two adult male rats! The only downside is the middle shelf is wire (which isn’t good for rat toes) so I took some extra laminate wood flooring I had and cut it with a saw to the shape of the shelf, which worked great and now they have hardwood floors (very fancy boys). But you could easily just place some plastic sheeting or even fleece covers on the wire to fix the problem. It’s super easy to clean with the large doors, and haven’t had any problems with the second door not opening. I did zip tie the Ramps to the bottom hooks on the shelves, as they just balance on them and my boys kept knocking them off, but not a big deal to add a few zip ties to hook on. Ive changed up the layout a few times and switch hammocks and toys often and it’s super easy to do, no issues with durability of the cage or bars on either shelf. It’s great that it’s on wheels, makes for easy moving!! I also took out the wire shelf on the bottom and left it so it was just the plastic bin, which I filled with bedding and litter, the space around it is definitely not big enough for any animal to squeeze out and escape, which I was worried about, and haven’t had any problems with the boys wanting to chew their way out. They love their new mansion! Highly recommend this cage 10/10, if you’re looking for something for rats, that’s not as pricey as a critter nation, this is an amazing deal and an amazing cage!!

GREAT CAGE FOR ITS PRICE!!
After my ferret kept protesting and showing his obvious distaste for the playpen I was keeping him in, I decided to stop putting off buying a real cage. Good ferret cages are soooooo expensive, but I was determined to find something "reasonable" without compromising size. I found the Prevue Hendryx 485 and bought it off Amazon without a second thought. A lot of reviews were saying how awful these cages are, the conditions they were in upon opening it for the first time, how bad the instructions are... In fact I tried to cancel my shipment because of these reviews and decided to just buy some $300 cage at Petco. I am so happy I was too late in canceling my order because I would have missed out on such a wonderful cage at a VERY reasonable price for its quality and size. It came in mint condition and packaging did a great job of protecting it; no broken trays, rust, broken bars from poor welding job, and snapped-off platform tabs like everyone was complaining about. Everything was wrapped up perfectly. The instructions were self explanatory. I really don't understand what the confusion was about. A lot of the bad reviews were saying how the manual did nothing for them, but I found myself having an easy time going through the steps. In fact, the pieces are so obvious, I'm pretty sure anyone could figure it out without the manual! As for confusion with the screws, all of them are exactly the same, except four that are shorter (which are used to hold platforms and top part in place). It's not that hard to mistaken them. I guess I got lucky with the cage. I'm extremely happy with what I got. Quality, design, and size (holy crap is it huge) are perfect for what I paid. My ferret willingly goes into this cage when I let him free roam because it's such a big space to explore! As for the complaints about the wire floor that neglects a ferret's anatomy, that is easily amendable with a couple of old t-shirts, towels, or tiles. I love that the whole cage is made of metal, because it is easy to clean and does not absorb smells. Annnnd shipping was really fast. I got it within the next day. And for the door opening on one side only... It's not that serious. The opening is so big you can take the platforms out without disassembling the whole cage, or just unscrew the top and lift them out. My only gripe is that I tend to take my ferret EVERYWHERE I go (like camping), and if I wanted to take the cage along, it isn't exactly the easiest to just break down and go. It takes 20 minutes to a half hour both breaking down and assembling. But it's ok, his playpen will do for his travel cage :)

It is a great cage but!
My ferrets love this cage. I had three in the cage and now I have two, and they all fit just fine which I was concerned about when I bought the cage. The cage is built ok. It has some rusting after about 6 months. Its mostly where the ferrets go the bathroom outside of the litter box. The door latches are great but the bottom door inside is coming away from the fame slightly. I don't think its anything to be concerned about at this point but its only been 6 months. When I initially took the cage out the box a couple of the wires on the side were slightly bend and one of the frame pieces was slightly bend. I don't know if this happened during shipping or if it was a defect in the making of the cage. Either way it was not enough for me to send it back (my ferrets needed a cage) and I just bent the parts back into the right shape. I did notice that the hammock that was supposed to come with the cage was missing one of the four clips that would make it useable. I emailed the prevue Hendryx company about this and they sent me a new one without to much trouble. I think that if it was not that I needed a cage ASAP for my ferrets, I would have sent it back to amazon for a replacement or maybe a different brand all together. I thought that this cage was a great cage for the price though. You can't get as big of a cage for a better price. I do have to say the cage was a little hard to put together. I am not bad at putting things together either. Some of the pieces fit very tightly and some of the screws were hard to get in. The directions were not the problem. It took me a good 2 hours to put it together. I use fleece for bedding which works great in this cage. The top main shelf does not have a tray and with ferrets there little feet have trouble walking of the wire so I always have it covered with fleece. We tried putting a newspaper litter in the bottom for about a week because the ferrets were not using the litter boxes. I was a disaster. The tray on the bottom is not tall enough to keep the litter in so the ferrets made a mess pushing it out. I think this would be a problem with any bedding type but fleece. One other complaint about this cage is that when the ferrets poop for pee outside of the litter boxes which is about 10% of the time it is really hard to clean because it gets caught in the crevasses of the metal pieces, or it falles out of the cage onto the wall or the floor. Either is not fun. This could be helped with a tall sided tray on the bottom. The other shelves could use a lip as well. The redeeming factor is that this cage can be taken apart without to much difficulty and cleaned in between the metal. Its not something you would want to do every day but I do a "deep" cleaning monthly. The two large doors make daily cleaning pretty easy. Every part of the cage is reachable. The wire on the sides is easy to attach hammock and water bottles. I don't think I would choose another cage even with all these complaints just because I think you get what you pay for and I was not willing to spend all the extra money to go with a cage that was better built. My ferrets are happy and healthy and are thriving in this cage they don't have any problems with it. I love the size of it and would not want anything smaller.

Does it work for rats? Yes!
This review is specifically for anyone who is looking at this as a potential rat home. I originally had a rat mansion (the petco one that sells for about 100), but I was getting two more rats and I wanted (1) a new (2) bigger and (3) more aesthetically pleasing (i.e. more like a piece of furniture) place for the four of them to share. Benefits: - Very large. Half of this is approximately 2/3 the size of the rat mansion, for comparison. - Easy to separate the two sections. I have two rats living in the top and two in the bottom, and though they do not get along this is a perfect way to keep them separated without having two separate cages. - Extremely high quality. This is a solid piece. It will last. And cleaning it is not terribly difficult. - Nice big doors for less stressfully picking up any shy rats. - Expandable! Not that you'd need to, probably, but it's kind of a nice option. You would NOT be able to reach a third level easily if you're short like me, though. Drawbacks (for rats): - Bedding will be kicked out. Since the bottom level is elevated, it will be kicked farther than with typical rat cages. - The ramps are impassable. You need to put something on top of the plastic for the rats to be able to use them. This is also commonly done for ferret tenets according to other reviews. - Can't hold babies. The bars are sufficiently close together for adult rats, but babies would definitely be able to get through. - Hard to climb. Compared to "rat" cages, the metal walls here are a bit more of a challenge due to the spacing of horizontal bars. It just takes the rats a bit more effort to scramble around. Not a big deal, but worth considering if you have elderly rats or just weaned rats. - Needs an exit ramp. If you rats, like most, enjoy romping around the room, you will need to provide them with a ramp to get up to that first level. It's farther than it looks. Overall, I'm very glad I bought it and I would buy it again. If you like making ramps and fun things for your rats to play on, this is the cage for you! You're not going to find this much space with this kind of quality in most cages. A very good buy for what you get. Some assembly is required, but it's pretty straightforward.

Great Cage!
I was a little hesitant to buy this product based on the reviews I read. We got it early, just in case something went wrong and we had to return it. We got the package in good condition. None of the corners were bent. When we opened it up, we found that one of the bars on the back side of the cage was bent slightly, but not enough to cause any problems. There was also some rust-like substance on the bars, but we were able to wipe it off easily, and it hasn't come back. The directions were a little difficult to read, and the parts aren't labeled, so we made a couple of mistake putting it together, but my boyfriend and I (mostly my boyfriend) got it put together in under an hour. Its probably a job for two people- I had to hold the pieces steady so he could put it together. The bottom (flooring) to the cage has pretty wide spaces, and when we got our rats in there, we noticed their feet were falling through. We took out the bottom floor so they can run around on the bedding. We just have to remove the rats from the cage to clean it, but that's not a big deal. The tray on the bottom pulls out really easily and just slides back in. The middle floor has the same problem, but we put little blankets down to help their little feet. The ramps are a little steep for rats, but our boys are pretty young still and they either run up the ramps or climb up the side of the cage. We may have to modify this when they get older and have a harder time climbing it. Other reviews said the ramps were made of sharp material, but ours are plastic and have no sharp edges. Our rats don't chew on them either. It does come with the hammock, which I thought was really nice. Its sturdy and cute. This cage is really sturdy on the casters. I don't feel like its going to fall over, even when I move it to vacuum. The platforms in the cage are plastic, but they're also really sturdy. You just have to make sure you get the ramps in right, or they'll fall off. Overall, we love this cage. Our rats are happy. We're happy. We're hoping to use it for ferrets later as well.

Excellent climbing cage for Easter Gray Squirrel Rehabilitation
We are very pleased with this cage, which is solid and spacious. We are licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and bought this as a climbing cage to house orphaned juvenile Eastern Gray Squirrels. In squirrel rehabilitation, the squirrels move through stages: an incubator or infant stage (being fed every few hours), the "baby" stage when they have 3-4 formula feedings daily (they are in a small animal cage for this), the climbing cage stage (they learn to move, jump, climb in a safe environment, but are still on formula), then the pre-release habitat (a specially designed enclosure mimicking life in the wild before they are ready for release). We were looking for a very specific size to fit a space in the rehabilitation room - this one fit perfectly. The fact that it has two sections, so one can be closed off for cleaning while the other section keeps the squirrels in - is fantastic. It's height and structure are perfect to provide different levels for the squirrels to jump and climb. This was very easy for my husband to put together - the instructions were clear, the parts logical, and the screws were all one type. It's solid but not so heavy that the two of us couldn't lift it up to place on a high counter. We outfitted the cage with solid branches for climbing and a few hanging pouches. We also covered all of the grilles (the ground one with a thick washable pee pad, which provides a comfortable ground surface), and platforms with multiple soft blankets to provide soft surfaces and nesting material (I use soft fleece and cotton baby receiving blankets for this). Caution: the bars are just big enough to keep a good-sized juvenile Eastern Grey Squirrel from squeezing out. They wouldn't be tightly spaced enough for a smaller squirrel, and a very young one might be able to wedge his way out. If we were to put smaller animals in here, we would first surround the cage in 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Note that we only used one ramp since squirrels don't need them. Also note that the plastic platforms might get chewed - if that happens, we'll replace them with solid wood. Also note that the size is appropriate for 1-2 squirrels (we got it for a special needs singleton), and not for larger groups. We have larger, custom-made climbing cages for small groups.

Affordable, sturdy... my ferret can't complain.
Very little complaints about the Prevue cage. I only have one ferret, and I think the size is good for her. With two ferrets, there isn't as much room to move around so I'd probably consider getting the Ferplast or Ferret Nation for two ferrets. It wasn't difficult to put together with two people. It only took us about 30 minutes to get it set up with the included tool. The cage doesn't have flat floors, instead it has bars. I wouldn't suggest letting a ferret walk on the bars; their feet might get stuck. I put towels on top, but bath rugs or any material that you can easily wash would work just as well. Only one side of the front doors open, there aren't double doors to fully open the cage. The top and bottom can be opened on the right side only, so cleaning the left side might need some extra reaching. I use a long scrub brush to clean between the bars. The bottom level has a pan that goes under the bars and catches debris like food. It can slide out only from the back, so you'll need to move the cage if you have it up against a wall. It does have wheels that are level and sturdy, at least for my case. There weren't any imperfections, dents, scratches, etc. All the pieces were included, with a few extra screws. Overall, it's definitely worth the price I paid. I would have to spend double for the bigger options, which I don't really need since my ferret roams the house most of the time. I reccomend this cage, but only for one ferret or a few rats. I also highly suggest covering the barred floors to prevent any injuries.

Excelente producto :)
Totalmente recomendable!
