Does the TTY connect directly to phone line or do you have to put phone receiver into the acoustic cups?

You have to put the phone receiver in the cups

How does a tty phone work

A TTY (teletypewriter) sends a specific sound/signal that corresponds to a letter or symbol on the keyboard over the phone line that another TTY recognizes, then displays it on its screen. This is why if the one of the parties does not have a TTY a relay service is used to provide the conversion.
