Here's the thing about this game. It is a generic action game. The combat is just as shallow as God of War or any other action game. The level design and game progression are totally obligatory as if the developers themselves where transcribing Level Design for Dummies. All that is fine. The thing that brings the design above generic is the heart. I care a lot about how much heart goes into a game. High Moon spent time and money on things that are frivolous. Now, that's not necessarily a good thing mind you; but, I become a good thing when the frivolous expenditures are for the player's sake. Models are created for throwaway gags, animations are made, sounds are fabricated, and voice work had to be done all for the sake of entertaining us, the players; all things that could have been glossed over and ignored for the sake of time and money. So in this sense, the design of the game itself is elevated above average. No here's the thing about Deadpool. I was hesitant to play this game because I felt that it would be a really long version of something. Have you seen The Simpsons Movie or Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie? If so, I believe you can relate to me looking at our watches during the film thinking, "I still have that much more to go?" That's what I was afraid of. While Deadpool flirts dangerously close to that (and would definitely get that it very well may for others), I finished Deadpool without feeling that sense of fatigue. With that concern out of the way, I must report that Deadpool is a complete delight and High Moon did something I've never seen anyone else do. Deadpool was the first time that could I relate to such an off-the-wall character. The brilliant way they did this was by never forcibly understand the character, nay. There is no arbitrary narrative dictating to us why Deadpool acts the way he acts. Instead, we simply watch events as Deadpool. That's it. Whenever we watching the X-Men, we might see someone like Deadpool and reflect on how annoying they're being. Now that we get to watch Deadpool, everyone else is a cameo and relative events are just coincidence. Aside from phenomenal character exposition (or lack thereof), the comedy is actually good. I was caught off guard and laughed out loud a few times, much to the chagrin of my nominally stoic facade. The only negative things I would really have to criticize the game about would be the upgrades and bosses. Firstly, however the artist in charge of the upgrade window totally dropped the ball, and I kinda think he worked remotely or for a different company altogether. A lot of the attitude and flamboyant tone of the game is wholly absent from this menu. The highlight around what your selection is slightly more visible that the background, which can be a strain at times, and there is a distinct lack of animations or any user-friendly screen transitions; it's all just really jarring 90's era menu design. The only saving grace from this screen is the comedy. Secondly, there are no nuanced or creative things about the boss fights to balance how horrible they are. In conclusion, Deadpool is a very fun game. As games are meant to be.
