So, I took that time.
In the fall of 2000 I heard/saw "I'm Like a Bird" and became a fan. I felt her debut album was decent, but not enough for me to get "Folklore" in 2003. In 2006, she came back stronger than before with "Loose" and "Promiscuous", "Maneater", and "Say It Right". Some felt she had sold out, moving into the Timbaland/Justin Timberlake camp. It did look that way. I think there was a backlash that damaged her career, plus her next album, 2009's "Mi Plan", which was all in Spanish, was a misstep. So, by the time she returned to herself in 2012 with "The Spirit Indestructible", she had lost most of her fanbase. This isn't uncommon in the music business, but it is curious, because Nelly Furtado always had talent, but sometimes that's just not enough to compete with the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and the changing tides of popular music. I don't think her last album, 2017's "The Ride", was even given a fair shake. It came and went with no hits, and the album didn't even chart in the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart, which is weird. So, last year, without any fanfare, she released "7", also to little notice, and with no hits and the album did not chart, either. After listening to it all week (and before that, listening to all of her albums in sequential order, except "Mi Plan", I found that, in general, I like Nelly Furtado's music). This latest album has all the quality control of her previous albums. There were only two songs I didn't really care for--"Better for Worse" and "All Comes Back", both ballads. Her other ballads here are better like "Crown", "Better Than Ever" and "Untitled". All of her dance songs are pretty good with "Showstopper", "Corazon", "Love Bites", "Floodgate", "Save Your Breath", and "Take Me Down" all radio-friendly hits that were not to be. I did notice that all 14 tracks were super short--most running under three minutes, which gives the impression that there was a lack of fully formed song ideas. Still, I'm not complaining about the brevity because most artists go on far too long. This album is 37 minutes, which meets my 'golden criteria' for how long an album should be. Get in, get out, I say. Less is more. I recently saw (October 2025) an article that suggested Nelly Furtado is stepping away from music for now to do other things. Well, I hope not, and it was seven years between her last album and this album, so what does 'stepping away' actually mean? She was already away for a long time. Here's how "7" compares to her other albums, save "Mi Plan", which I don't own and didn't listen to: 2000 Whoa, Nelly!: Four Stars 2003 Folklore: Four Stars 2006 Loose: Four Stars 2012 The Spirit Indestructible: Four Stars 2017 The Ride: Four Stars 2024 7: Four Stars

For Tiktok?
Don't get me wrong, I'm so glad to have Nelly Furtado back! But... this isn't her best work. All of the tracks average less than 3 minutes and almost feel like they're formatted for Tiktok. It's a fun album but feels a little... Soulless, especially coming from The Ride which was pure emotion.

i have been a fan of Nelly since "maneater" and she has released quite a few albums since then that have been just as good but not had the commercial or single success for some reason....they have all been pretty solid albums and this new album is no exception. If you heard the first single "love bites" you will know she has not lost any of her unique dance sound - and the album has some great catchy bangers - like corazon", "ready for myself" and "fantasy" !!! as well as some beautiful ballads "crown" "all come back" and "better than ever" - my personal favourite is the super pop catchy anthem " honesty" which could be a huge hit! closer followed by "floodgate" with its guitar driven pop. yes i am a huge fan of nelly but this is a really strong album even it was by someone else - Nelly has retained her unique style and vocally and lyrically its excellent. if you are a nelly fan you will love it - if you are new to miss Furtado - welcome! you will not be disappointed!
