can I use this on a wrought iron gate in situ

Yes you can. I will write the exact instructions on the back of the container. "preclean item if it is oily. Soak evaporust into smooth high quality paper towels, and cover area to be de rusted. Flatten the towels to remove air bubbles, and then cover the towels in plastic sheeting to prevent evaporust from drying. Use magnets to hold the towels and plastic in place IF necessary. Allow towels to remain wet on the surface for 1-12 hours, depending on the depth and age of rust. Check progress periodically. Once rust is removed, rinse item with water". This is exactly how the manufacturer recommends treating large / immoveable items.
