I do not understand your question. The barcode scanner scans barcodes and writes the number that the barcode represents to the open file as though that number had been typed into the computer keyboard. If the “things” you refer to have barcodes on their surfaces, in the appropriate format, the scanner will almost certainly read them and input the number represented by the code.

what does the 'decode capability' mean? Does this mean it can list a product name from a barcode?

Decode capability mainly refer to decode speed and bite erro rate. Normally for 2D scanners if your barcode contains a product name they can output it after you scan it . NT-1698W is 1D laser scanner it can not decode 2D codes, please pay attention to that.

Can nt-1698w connect to a windows 7 host pc over the virtual com port?

This model dost not support virtual com port.
