Filling a huge gap in our spiritual culture, here--at last--is a comprehensive and elegant translation of the 1854 French masterwork of occult philosophy. The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic reignited the esoteric spiritual search in the West and led to the emergence of Madame Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, and the New Age revolution. Levi's study of magic is an absolute must for every seeker in occult, esoteric, and druidic realms; but this need has been frustrated by dated and inaccurate translations--until now. Greer, a respected occult scholar, and Mikituk, a masterful translator, collaborate to restore this landmark work--complete with its original illustrations and symbols--to the center of the alternative spiritual canon." Review: Historical - I love this book it shows how far we have come from when this was written but how many truths never change Review: Fabulous read - A fabulous and illuminating read, great job by John Michael Greer and Mr Mikituk in this elegant translation. Highly recommend! Edit: Eliphas Levi was a devout catholic and even though he left the priesthood, remained so throughout his life. In this book, he warns against the dangers of black magic, evil intentions and satanism. In many ways, whilst some ideas about women may be of their era, he seems ahead of his time in the way he describes what one might call the evolution of humanities consciousness. Basically, donโt be put off reading this if you are under the erroneous impression that it is about satanism, as that is far from the case. Again, the authors do a great job with the translation and John Michael Greers introduction is just brilliant.

So.....what's new?
I've rated this five stars because if you want a translation of Levi, this is one. But checking the text of the "look inside" option (all they give you is the introduction) it doesn't seem very different to A E Waite. A few words changed, that's all. So if you think you're going to get an updated modern version of Levi's 1896 text -- which is what I had hoped for -- this doesn't fit the bill. So I didn't buy it.

Jolly good fun
Superb, but risible in parts. If you have ever played Diablo III, i'm sure you'd notice that the figure of Zoltan Kule is loosely based on Mr Levi. A quote from each: "Unbalanced forces perish in the void", or "Angels are no better than demons..." difficult to tell the difference at times.

Some useful traces of information to use as starting points
Comically dated gender roles. Some useful traces of information to use as starting points. Not a place to find a definitive guide. Heavy on opinion.

A true adept of the Occult
The man responsible for the Re emergence of the magical arts out of the grips of Christianity. I have read this book cover to cover and can tell this Alphonse Louise Constant wielded true knowledge an expressed himself with great colorful prose.

A must have, even if you have the original English translation
I love this new translation. The book becomes instantly readable. A.E. Waite is infamous for his long winded meandering and almost unreadable victorian verbal masturbation. The message comes through much more clearly, and Greer's introduction is definitely worth reading. I still prefer the original translation of the Conjuration of the Four, including the prayers of the elementals, which I still use in ritual, but as a readable and re-readable version of Levi's Opus, this is a desert island book for me.
