'The life-changing new plan that'll make you healthier, happier and slimmer.' Daily Mail Your gut is astonishingly clever. It contains millions of neurons - as many as you would find in the brain of a cat - and is home to the microbiome, trillions of microbes that influence your mood, your immune system, and even your appetite. In this ground-breaking book, Dr Mosley takes us on a revelatory journey through the gut, showing how junk food and overuse of antibiotics have wiped out many good gut bacteria, leading to a modern plague of allergies, food intolerances, and obesity. Drawing from the latest cutting-edge research, Dr Mosley provides scientifically proven ways to control your cravings, boost your mood, and lose weight by encouraging a more diverse microbiome and increasing the good bacteria that keep you healthy. Packed with delicious, healing recipes, meal plans, checklists, and tips, The Clever Guts Diet includes all the tools you need to transform your gut and your health, for life. Review: Another great read - I bought this book based on my positive experience with Dr Mosley’s other book, the Fast Diet. I originally downloaded a sample and was so engrossed that when I suddenly ran out of chapters in the sample, I immediately bought the book to keep reading. People have been noticing the changes in my health and appearance and been asking me what diet I’m following, so I’ve been avidly telling them about Dr Mosely and his books and literally recruiting people into trying it, as if it some sort of cult. Everyone is getting desertcart links in their inboxes from me as if I’m on commission. I met someone else at work who also suffers from digestive problems similar to mine, so we spent a lunch time discussing the information I’d learnt and Dr Mosley’s discoveries regarding our gut health. Even if you chose to not follow a rigid diet plan, understanding what’s going on in side helps us to make better choices regarding our food and health which is not a bad thing. I’ve also bought another copy of this book for my mother who has been diagnosed with diverticulitis and suffers badly through bloating - whilst Dr Mosley does not directly cover this condition, I’m convinced reading about her gut health and following the elimination and reintroduction plan and maybe even trying the fast diet, will help with a lot of her symptoms and hopefully therefore prevent any future issues. It could certainly help her to get her gut microbiome back to a healthier state which is always a positive. I totally enjoyed reading Dr Mosley’s books and would recommend them as for the few pounds they cost to purchase, it could make a huge difference to your health, for the better. Review: Every Gut owner should read this book! - Cannot recommend this book enough, such an interesting read and delicious recipes in the back, I never knew just how much our gut bacteria controlled, quite incredible and crucial to our wellbeing. Michael has written and very easy to read enjoyable book, as interesting and fascinating as his shows. I have high hopes of it helping my IBS along with losing weight. Its a way of healthy eating as well as being a diet, if you want to lose weight you'll lose loads on this and fast! Being pre menopausal with bit of an under active thyroid I was having terrible trouble trying to lose weight, I've tried WW and Slimming World in the past, lost some weight on both but it was painfully slow and I put it all back on soon as I came off diet. This I think will be different as it teaches you a different healthy way of eating that reduces the fattening starchy carbs and increase the filling good fats, no calorie or point counting so something you can stick to for life, it's based on a low carb Med. style diet with added gut friendly fermented foods. I've followed it for 3 weeks and already have lost half a stone, which is a big weight loss for me, I normally only ever lose half a pound a week on all previous diets and I don't feel like I'm dieting at all because I'm not having to cut good fats out or calorie count, I can have plenty of the foods I love, like full fat greek yogurt, cheese, nuts, seeds and oils. I thought I'd miss potatoes, pasta and rice, I was addicted to potato but I can honestly I have missed them at all because the food recommended is so yummy. The recipes I've tried so far have all been delicious, yet to try Kefir or homemade yoghurt but I've made the Purple Sauerkraut and it was much nicer than I imagined it would be, personally I would leave out the spices I don't think it needs it. The Nutty Granola is delicious, as is the Beef Goulash and Kashmiri Chicken, the Cauliflower Rice is dead tasty and lovely with it, I tried it with and without Tahini as I'm not keen on that and thought it was much nicer without. The bone broth is a great way to cook chicken thighs with bone in, gives it a lovely flavour and is so tender. Carrot and Turmeric soup is lovely a flavoursome, looking forward to trying the rest of the recipes. Would love Michael to bring out a Clever Guts Diet Recipe book, I have his other book the Low Blood Sugar Diet together with the Low Blood Sugar Diet Recipe book, they're excellent and bursting with delicious recipes, I've been using from these books alongside the Guts diet as they on on they follow the same principles.

Great book but arrived with stains on
Great book but arrived with stains on. This was a gift so when my friend informed me I tried to complain but could only start a return. However my friend wanted and washed the book so I cancelled the return but Royal Mail still tried to collect it. Ruined what was meant to be a nice gift experience From the clean copy I own, it is a good easy to read book and very informative. Has changed how I see foods

I wish everyone would buy and read this book
This book is fantastic. I have to say I'm a fan of Michael Mosley's TV documentaries, and he comes across exactly the same in the book. Over the years, there have been a vast number of differing views on the intestinal system, whether it's no more than a waste disposal system, or a finely tuned instrument that monitors your energy levels, your appetites and weight levels, your immune system, and even your moods. Many claims come from alternative practitioners who stand to make a lot of money if we go down their route. By contrast Michael uses a completely evidence-based approach, citing many examples of proper research and double-blind studies. He is a properly trained medic, but unlike many of his medical colleagues, is refreshingly open to new ideas as long as they are backed-up by evidence (and he never shies away from using himself as a guineapig). Our modern lifestyle has somehow increased the incidence of immune system related illness, as well as obesity and diabetes. Very little was known about the gut until recently, but there has finally been more research into our food-processing and waste system, and some of the discoveries are extraordinary. Not least that it contains as many neurons (brain cells) as the brain of a cat. A very finely tuned eco-system, that gets devastated by such things as broad-spectrum antibiotics. I have some good friends and relatives who have had quite serious long term problems with their immune systems, who have been told by their doctors that it is "all in the mind" or that they should "pull themselves together". At the same time, all sorts of alternative therapists are out there, each with a completely different take on what the problem is and the solution to it. Some of them might have the right idea, others might be an expensive load of rubbish, as some of my friends have discovered. But how do you find out - who do you trust? What authority do you go to? That was supposed to be the job of the GP, but in many cases they just stick to the conventional way of drugs and surgery. Finally in Michael Mosley, we have someone who is pulling together all the available information, finding what works and sifting out what doesn't. I can't recommend this book enough.

Another enlightening read from Michael Mosley.
I love Michael Mosley. I think he's an absolute credit to his profession, and I love the way he goes above and beyond to prove/disprove theories just to help others, as well as himself. This book didn't disappoint. It's a journey into your microbiome which is in your gut. It contains information on how to 'change' it, or make it more diverse. We are learning all the time in the science field that the gut could be the route of a lot of problems - including such things as depression and anxiety. It's a fascinating area and Dr. Mosley does a fantastic job at explaining it. He's not patronising, but at the same time he doesn't shy away from medical/scientific language. He explains everything very well and in the right amount of details. I also really liked that he says he can't shy away from chocolate no matter how much he tries - chocolate is my downfall too, made me feel a bit better about myself! Who would I recommend this book to? Anyone that's interested in their microbiome or altering their diet to make their gut healthier, and possibly losing weight and making yourself more 'happy' in the process. Anyone that's interested in different diets as well - there's a good few recipes at the back of the book that are gut-friendly. I'd also recommend it to anyone that's enjoyed any of Michael Mosley's programmes on television - he's very much the same in the book. Very enjoyable and enlightening to read.

For beginners in gut health, its a good start. For those with knowledge, its a bit disappointing!
I've read A LOT about gut health. Since 2013 I've been clean eating (Paleo), and 2014 I began low carb eating (ketogenic) both to help with my gut issues as well as a chronic health condition. Unfortunately nothing seemed to help and the NHS declared me 'all clear' and stuck an IBS label on me. I see a private specialist and had a comprehensive digestive stool analysis done which Identified me as having Small intestine bacterial over growth (SIBO) as well as auto brewery syndrome. Antibiotics had wreaked my gut (Hardcore antibiotics due to Lyme disease) so I decided to try a natural approach. In 2016 found a book called The Gut health protocol (2nd edition / by John Herron) and that has been the ONLY book That's helped me so far! I added in a low FODMAP and AIP diet and its helping a lot. (I also follow the protocol from the book too). I had bought this book by Michaal in the hope of advancing my knowledge and learn something new but there's literally nothing in it that's really new or ground breaking. If you are not one for reading about gut health and/or are newly diagnosed with a gut issue then it would be helpful as it can give some good underpinning knowledge. It also gives a brief description of some of the supplements that can help heal the gut. It touches (very very briefly) on leaky gut (what it is but that's about it). It also have a handful of recipes in. The down side is that if you have leaky gut, SIBO or fructose/ histamine issues/ reflux, which is often the case with gut problems - this book doesn't discuss it. Overall its a good book, but better for those who gave no gut health knowledge. As for the recipes - just google "Paleo recipes" and you will find TONs of mouth watering recipes. For me I was quite disappointed, just glad it didn't cost very much!

Before you even decide to join a slimming club: READ THIS!!
Just WOW! An amazing read with food facts that up to now go against everything I've been programmed to know and understand about the food I choose to eat. I've battled with my weight since childhood: could never understand why despite going on numerous diets over the years, I couldn't keep the weight off. In my adult years, I've suffered with mild IBS. Following the simple guides to this very well written, user friendly book, I now understand how my gut works and what food I should be eating to keep my gut bacteria healthy. Along the way, I've learnt that fat doesn't make you fat...sugar does! I know a good carb from a bad carb - so can now make better choices. I've discovered that life isn't always fair, that some of us are born/programmed to burn calories others, like me(!) store their food as fat. I'm still on my journey to 'rebooting' my gut as I'm only just over two weeks into the 'diet' (although it doesn't feel like a diet because I'm actually eating MORE!). I'm enjoying trying new 'fermented' foods, probiotics and prebiotics - and although I am yet to cook/try one of the recipes within the book, I have developed a taste for blue cheese and dark chocolate in the process! I can proudly report, that in just 16 days, I have lost 9lbs! I'm looking forward to seeing where these new lessons I've learnt take my health, and that of my family. Thank you Dr Michael: You are a life changer!

worth reading if you want to know why you get fat and "they" don't
This is stuff we all need to know. It feels like we have finally got to the beginning of really understanding how nutrition/diet/digestion/getting fat or thin really work. And it is a lot more complicated than calories in v calories used. The reason being that "calories in" has always assumed - or only been able to calculate - the absolute number of calories consumed. The number of calories in food is measured by burning it, which gives you all the possible chemical energy. By this measure, say coal, wood or plastic are all highly calorific - but on a diet of them a human would starve to death. What we really need to be comparing is the much more complex and variable calories extracted, which as this book explains, depends on what you, along with your gut bacteria can digest. This book is very interesting, and well written in Michael Moseley's usual chatty but authoritative style, but it seemed a bit short (I was surprised when I got to the end!). It covers much the same ground as Gut by Giulia Enders, but her book is more comprehensive. I would reccommend that anyone interested in health and diet (as opposed to dieting) read both.

Read
I read this after reading gut by gulia enders. It includes foods and routines that help build a strong core but most of the recipes are non vegetarian.
