Can i connect this to a hidden network and then hide the extended wifi?

Yes. In Advanced Wireless settings on the EX2700 it is possible to turn off SSID broadcast once connected. Connect via http://www.mywifiext.net using "admin" and "password" as the default logon for the device. As an ex network manager I have to point out that there really is no additional security in hiding a wifi network's SSID. Anyone seriously wanting to check wifi signals in an area will use a network sniffer that ignores the SSID.

will it work with my virgin media super hub?

Yes plug the unit in next to your hub. Press the wps button in the unit until it flashes green, then hold the virgin media symbol on your virgin media hub until the symbol flashes purple, then the device will connect. Once connected turn off the unit and moove where required

How do I know if I need a 300, 750 or 1200 Mbps one? And whether I should choose AC dual band or N300?

Steven Bolt's answer is a good one, but two more factors to bear in mind is the range you want to achieve (higher speed devices will perform better at greater range) and whether you want to be able to transfer things with devices within your home network as well as just over the internet. If you have a home server such as a NAS box, or DLNA devices, or CCTV cameras, or backup devices, or just want to move things between computers over the network, then a faster device will be better.

Will this work with BT Home Hub 4?

It works brilliantly with my BT Home Hub 4. It has cured my range problem completely - I am very pleased with it!
