In this thoroughly revised new edition, the popular guide firmly embraces the digital age with new content about digital audio, intelligent lighting, LED lighting, video projection, and show control systems, all explained in the same approachable style that has kept this book in the pockets of industry professionals for many years. A brand-new chapter on sound design has also been added, and every chapter has been updated with more information about the basics of theater technology, including draperies, lighting instruments, microphones, costume sketches, and more. This book teaches: Whoโs who on a theatrical production team What is needed to know about technical theater and why What to look for when choosing a space for a show How to communicate with lighting, scenery, audio, and costume designers How to stage manage an effective show or presentation Covering both traditional and digitally supported backstage environments, this book is an essential guide for working with every technical aspect of theater! Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. While we don't aspire to publish a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are deeply committed to quality books that help creative professionals succeed and thrive. We often publish in areas overlooked by other publishers and welcome the author whose expertise can help our audience of readers. Review: One of my favorite books! - Wow, this is an amazing book. It's fantastic for explaining all aspects of theater in an easy-to-understand fashion. But it's not just for theater. Are you putting on an event for your business or a big party? There's information in this book that can help you as well. I've taken sound engineering classes in college, and this book did a better job of teaching than a whole semester in the sound lab. Not only that, but the author does a FANTASTIC job making the information speak equally to men and women. Instead of thinking that some areas are traditionally staffed by men, why not have a woman do the sound, electrical, carpentry, etc. (for, for that matter, men working in the costume shop). This book gives the information needed for anyone to consider any of these tasks with confidence. The author has a sense of humor and a great way of looking at things. When I say it's one of my favorite books, I don't just mean in the sense of a technical theater book. I mean one of the best books I've ever read. It's inspiring. Review: Excellent beginner book - This book covers a lot of ground in tech theatre with simple explanations and images. It explains a lot of thought process and reasoning for why things are the way they are in the theatre world as well as functional information. Highly recommend to anyone who teaches tech theatre in high school or is looking to get into technical theatre.

Perfect for introductory college course
I found this book a helpful text for teaching an introductory college course on the technical aspects of the theater. The main challenge in such an environment is teaching creatives who may be quite talented and motivated, except when it comes to the more technical side of the theater. This book is the best I've encountered to meet this challenge. The author touches on all the important names and topics that are suitable for an introductory college course. And the tone, illustrations, and examples make the technical topics quite accessible.
