I am very sensitive to hiss, and these speakers have some of the quietest hiss I've experienced, so quiet that I hardly ever hear it. At half volume or below (I usually have the volume at halfway), the hiss is at the same level and is VERY low. To you hear it, you have to be in a silent room and closer than 2.5 feet from them. When the volume is turned up past halfway, which I do occasionally for a really quiet youtube video, the hiss graduated increases, but it's still fairly quiet. The hiss only becomes a problem when you turn the volume knob up past 3/4 which I don't recommend you do anyway because it is likely unnecessary and unhealthy for the drivers.

Saw some blogs on changing speaker wire for better sound rather than using the included wiring. Recommendations from anyone?

I can almost bet that is not the case. considering the vast array of products that exist for audiophiles that are just snake oil and people will swear it makes a difference and has been proven to do nothing or actually make things worse, I'm betting it's nothing more than a placebo effect. I highly doubt they are going to include subpar cables. It's just speaker wire. I plan on using the included wire with mine. I just haven't gotten around to setting them up yet

Do I need a amplifier or just hook up turntable

Unless your turntable has a built-in pre-amp, you would need a turntable pre-amp to boost the very low level volume that needles produce, or a dj mixer. You do not need a receiver,
