New and revised 5th Edition available April. Pre-order now! Since 1973, tens of thousands of first-time and experienced beekeepers alike have relied on The Beekeeper's Handbook as the best single-volume guide to the hobby and profession of beekeeping. Featuring clear descriptions and authoritative content, this handbook provides step-by-step directions accompanied by more than 100 illustrations for setting up an apiary, handling bees, and working throughout the season to maintain a healthy colony of bees and a generous supply of honey. This book explains the various colony care options and techniques, noting advantages and disadvantages, so that beekeepers can make the best choices for their own hives. This fourth edition has been thoroughly redesigned, expanded, updated, and revised to incorporate the latest information on Colony Collapse Disorder, green IPM methods, regional overwintering protocols, and procedures for handling bees and managing diseases and pests such as African honey bees and bee mites. The book explains not only how but also why each step is part of the transformative process that results in the magnificent creation of honey. This essential guide is a beekeeper's most valuable resource. Colony Collapse Disorder has renewed our recognition of the importance of small-scale beekeeping and the critical role of bees in the production of our food supply. For the growing number of beekeepers looking to set up hives for either a rewarding hobby or a profitable commercial enterprise, this updated and revised essential how-to guide includes: • step-by-step directions for all stages from setting up an apiary to harvesting honey; • approximately 100 illustrations featuring techniques, equipment, and bee biology; • information about how to manage new pests and diseases including Colony Collapse Disorder; • coverage of new trends and changes in beekeeping including green IPM techniques and new laws for urban beekeeping; • the most up-to-date bibliography and list of resources on the topic; and • a new user-friendly book design that clearly highlights instructions and other important features. Review: Very Informative - This book goes way above what I thought it would! After reading all I could about raising bees online I felt very dissatisfied with what I had learned. I've read about a quarter of this book so far and it has blown me away with information! I especially love all the diagrams that show step by step instructions on how to do things like preparing bees for harvesting honey. It also goes very in depth about bees themselves and their diseases and treatments. I am extremely satisfied with this product and definately reccomend! For those interested, this book is on the State of Texas Agrilife website and suggested reading material for beekeeping. Review: I recommend this book to all beekeepers of every level. - The Beekeeper’s Handbook is has always been my primary “go to” information source whenever I have a question or a problem with my hives. In fact, I’ve used it as a guide from my first days as a beginning beekeeper some 12 years ago. It covers everything from hive construction to harvesting honey and everything in between. It’s well illustrated with clear diagrams and the text is easily understandable for the beginner. This 4th edition has been expanded to cover CCD (colony collapse disorder), green pest management and mite control. I’ve found this book invaluable in maintaining a growing apiary and keeping my bees healthy and productive.

Great Resource Book for Beekeeping
Excellent, fact filled book with lots of information on bee biology and beekeeping in general. Great as a resource book, especially for the beginning beekeeper. Even though it's fact filled, and a bit technical, it's easy to read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is a beginning beekeeper as well as a resource for the more advanced to expert beekeeper as it's filled with information. You can learn or brush up on your knowledge while reading this excellent beekeeping book.

A must have for the beginner beekeeper!
I am an amateur beekeeper and spend a great deal of my time reading every book I can find about beekeeping. This book is by far one of the better books, at least for me. It is more technical than many of the other books I've read, but not too much that I need a degree in entomology to understand. It would be nice if there were actual pictures rather than just illustrations, but the illustrations are nice. Each book I've read I've picked up some great piece of advice so if you're new to beekeeping read, read, read. I would recommend this on your reading list.

Great Reference
As a new-bee beekeeper, I relied on the "Dummies" book and local SME's. I don't have the 3rd edition of TBH to compare, but this 4th edition has an abundance of great information and exceptional illustrations and diagrams. The index is not extremely detailed, but it is functional, and I have found information for some odd questions with just a little digging. There are 28 pages of further reference materials on diverse subjects ranging from abbreviations to wintering, and several interesting subsections. For example, some of my unused equipment was devastated by wax moths due to my own negligence. Who knew- or even wanted to know- you could raise wax moths to sell to fishermen, or simply eat them yourself? I believe I'll just stick to honey for now.

Welcome to the 4th Edition
This book is now in its 4th edition. That certainly tells you that it contains the essential information not only for beginning beekeepers but for all beekeepers. The diagrams are excellent and enhance the explanations in the text so that beekeepers not only read the information but see what they need to do. It is a book that all beekeepers will use for ready reference. It will be an excellent choice of textbook for bee courses on all levels. Those who have previous editions in their bee book collections will welcome the most current information in this 4th edition. I highly recommend this book to all beekeepers.

Great study text for the New-Bee as well as the experienced beek.
Excellent study for new-bees and veterans alike, written in common English and easy to understand. Each section is well illustrated with color photos. I studied this book when I checked out a copy from the NEOBA Club library last year, and found myself referring back to it on my hive construction projects. I just had to have my own copy to refer to so I could write in the margins and doodle my thoughts inside. One of these days this book will become a treasured heirloom. Get one of your own.

Great source of information on beekeeping
I bought this book primarily for educating myself about some of the more-advanced problems and situations I might face with beekeeping, but found the material useful even at a beginning level. Between this book, and another I've reviewed, I've found the information on bee diseases and pests to be invaluable with a recent problem in one of my hives. The information is presented in a way that's insightful and useful without getting too technically over-the-top. I'm pleased with this purchase and would recommend this book as a handy one to have for help in any aspect of beekeeping.
