I ordered this and it was 36 inches wide by 96 inches long. (Opposite of the pictures, etc.) Did I misunderstand the description?

How large is the shipping container?

Hello! This calendar is fulfilled by Amazon, therefore, Amazon decides what size shipping container it will be in. The calendar itself will be rolled into a 36" long tube that is 4" wide. Hope this helps!
