A Dakota-English Dictionary (Borealis Books)

Arrives in good shape and is just as says. My mistake is bought wrong one.

I am so glad to have this. I am learning Lakota, but a lot of learning material that I have found (like the new Dakota Bible here on Amazon) is in Dakota. Dakota is different enough from Lakota sometimes that I can't figure it out, and this dictionary has been great help!

I got this because my son is Dakota Sioux. It has come in handy, but there are still things his father says that I can not find in this dictionary.

I like this dictionary very much as it has many of the older words that I wish to learn.It has the Eastern Dakota spelling which I like. There are not many Dakota dictionaries just for the Eastern Dakota so thisis a must have for me. I recommend this dictionary. Thank you for reading this.

This being about the only Dakota-English dictionary still in print makes it good enough. But there are a lot of words you will not find in here, and forget about help for which tenses to use. It is limited, often frustrating, but it is the only one. I also had to purchase the English-Dakota dictionary, because for some ridiculous reason (most dictionaries provide both (Forgein Language)-English & English-(Forgein Language)translations in ONE book) this dictionary only goes one way, so you have to buy another one to get the rest! Annoying & Expensive!

The dakota english dictionary by Stephen R. Riggs was put together and is easy to use by anyone wanting to learn the dakotahlanguage.

First published in 1852 and not revised since! It was written by missionaries and based mainly on their translation of the Bible into Dakota. So the selection of word entries and their English glosses show a strong Christian bias. So not only is it outdated, but it wasn't a very good dictionary to start with, even though it was a better start than nothing. If you are looking for a more reliable Dakota dictionary, consider The New Lakota Dictionary which gives variants for all of the Dakota dialects.
