Will this work in the new envy 5055?

Yes. The HP Envy 5055 requires either HP65 or HP65XL ink cartridge. The newer HP Envy 5055 is not included in the list of printers that use this cartridge. The description should be updated.

Does this ink cartridge dry up if unused for a while?

I have not experienced the ink drying out, even if not used for long periods of time.

Does anyone here happen to know exactly how much ink is in the regular 65 vs the 65xl tri-color and black cartridges?

Hello, According with the manufacturer the standard HP 65 goes up to 100 pages vs 300 pages from the 65XL Tri-Color, the standard black color is up to 120 pages and the XL cartridge is the same 300 pages.
