Q: Do the pieces stay in place and can a child play with it, lift it up etc without falling apart?

The pieces do stay in place securely. My 4 year old plays with these frequently, and sometimes needs help to get them apart to re-configure the pieces. Good quality. I recommend.

Q: Can the rocket ships be mismatched/mixed to make different ships?

Yes. All the pieces come apart and the rockets are innerchangable. Great toy.
