My opening is 43.6" wide. Can it be cut to fit

I would probably keep looking and find a narrower gate. You would have to remove an amount of material that would negate the use of the cross brace, require removing at least one vertical slat, and on top of that, make sure the gate remained perfect on both diagonals. I would guess that a fence company could fit something for you for about the same cost.

Can the gate open towards or away from you?

The gate can be opened in either direction depending on how you orient your hinges.

Can this be cut down to a specific size?

Probably, but it will be best to use the gate at its manufactured width if at all possible. It is a very nice gate with great hardware.
