I have a receiver situated approximately 10m from the transmitter. The transmitter has the included aerial attached. The receiver has no aerial attached. There are two solid brick walls and a wooden floor between tx and rx. I have a multitude of other devices running at 2.4GHz (BT, wifi, XBee) and 864MHz (XBee) in the immediate vicinity. This setup works 100% of the time without fail. I have not tested full range with higher gain aerials but I expect the distance achieved would be at least 15m and ait further clear line of sight.

Q: can you use a 173mm wire for the antennas for better range ?

I have only used the aerials supplied with the units.

Q: What is the maximum range for these modules on an arduino for example?

A few 10s of meters in open air. It's very much a case of YMMV. The MCU drive has no effect on the the range, but you'll get a better range if you position the aerial correctly. HAM radio clubs and similar websites are the best source of information regarding this sort of tech. 433Mhz being UHF only really travels in straight lines and it won't punch through walls, etc.

Q: Do the transmitters have unique ID's so as not to trigger multiple receivers in range?

Yes, I believe 65,535 (16 bit) IDs, so the chances of having two with the same ID is slim.
