How long will the co2 cartridge maintain pressure afer it is pierced.

I've put a cartridge in mine, fired it a couple of times, set it down for weeks, picked it back up and it is fine. No apparent loss of pressure. Michael's answer of around 70 shots is probably pretty accurate. I haven't counted but you can definitely tell when the cartridge needs changing. You can hear when the pellet doesn't have the same punch behind it and the pellets start hitting low. I think it may be more like 50 shots? I know that when I do notice the cartridge needs changing, I unscrew the cap and only get a short "phisst" and that is it. It's empty. It uses all the CO2 effectively.

could this take out a rat?

Yes, in fact in the UK the 2240 is renamed "The Ratcatcher" on the box it comes in. In other countries I think it's named the "Ratbuster". If I can kill racoons with my 1000 fps .177 then this 620 fps .22 can take out rats and squirrels!

How many shots from one co2 ?

About 30-35 before you notice a drop in pressure.

Can you put a silencer on it? What kind? Does it affect the power?

I second that Mike from TKO makes one heck of a moderator for all kinds of air guns including the crosman 2240. With the moderator on 2240 your neighbors won't be able to hear you shoot targets in backyard in fact the pellet impacting target is louder than the shot!! Very quiet. Hope this helps . I believe it was under $60.00.
