Created by NASA for high school students interested in space science, this collection of worked problems covers a broad range of subjects, including mathematical aspects of NASA missions, computation and measurement, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, matrix algebra, conic sections, and calculus. In addition to enhancing mathematical knowledge and skills, these problems promote an appreciation of aerospace technology and offer valuable insights into the practical uses of secondary school mathematics by professional scientists and engineers. Geared toward high school students and teachers, this volume also serves as a fine review for undergraduate science and engineering majors. Numerous figures illuminate the text, and an appendix explores the advanced topic of gravitational forces and the conic section trajectories. Review: Well written Great book - This is a Well written Great book. Provides a great starting point for being inspired to learn more math Review: Great resource for teachers - This is a great resource for High School science and math teachers. Problems with solutions are provided that show how the mathematics their students are currently learning find real world applications in space science and technology. Compiled by NASA personnel, these problems will both serve to instruct and to get students excited about space science and technology. There is a wide range of difficulty, from simple computations to fairly involved derivations.

Cool book for an engineering major
Cool book for an aspiring astronautical engineer. Most of the math is over my head at this point but it gave me some inspiration in my math courses because it has examples of a lot of the concepts that we are learning, but in a context that is less abstract than is covered in school. Basically it showed me why I care to learn the math by explaining how it is applied to astronautical problems. Cool book to have.

For the right audience it's a good book, for most of the rest of us either obtuse or too basic
If high school kids can get through this they are way more accomplished than I was at that age. This would be for the hardcore and rare teenager that loves math and space and is already at AP level. For me, I got as a basic review for some of my rusty skills for a new job role and for that it was too basic, but fun to revisit some stuff. Dated of course, with the shuttle focus but it's so rare to find math problems that use space as primary examples that I'm sure that can be forgiven. This would be something I might give to a high school senior to work over the summer right before they attend college, help them get in the zone if they are entering into a physics or engineering curriculum. Not sure anyone else would get anything out of it.

for math, physics, engineering hobbist
HS students who like math, physics, engineering , good assortment of problems you get in these careers. good background. although many problems difficult they are clearly explained, illustrated. HS students and freshman college students could study these problems, methods of solution so that when they encounter a very difficult problem on an exam and are stopped, they will think, "wait a minute, i've seen a part of this before".

Great resource!
Wonderful collection of problems and examples, suitable for students from high school through early undergraduate. I've reworked several of the FORTRAN programs into Python to use with a Computational Physics class...

My Son Loves It
My son loves this book. He studied it in his summary break between 8th grade and 9th grade. He is a bit of a math nerd, it still took him about 6 weeks to complete this book.

Read before you buy
Warning ! This book has only solved problems. This book doesn’t cover any theory or derivations of any formulas. In order to solve all the problems independently one must have preliminary knowledge about calculus, trigonometry and higher level mathematics. If you think you have excellent knowledge in calculus and algebra/ trigonometry, this book is for you. However this book has explained all the solves problems nicely. But there is no derivation or theories in this book.
